10 QUESTIONS WITH… Artist JARED YAMAHATA
We caught up artist & fire truck siren appreciator Jared Yamahata and asked him 10 questions. Here's what he had to say.
In a world where art critiques were given by animals, which animal do you think would enjoy your work the best and what sort of feedback would they have?
Jared: Goldfish. Short term memory and easily amused. They'd swim back around and enjoy the art like new every time.
Drawing parallels with literature, how do art prints serve as a form of visual storytelling, and what narrative elements are unique to the printed medium?
Jared: I think gig posters are a like a polaroid of the concert. The artwork helps relive the event.
Exploring the intersection of art and technology in printmaking, how might innovations such as augmented reality and A.I. enhance or challenge traditional notions of the printed image?
Jared: I feel that technology and art can be very cool and immersive. combining virtual reality with printed art could include moving images and music.
If you could create a portrait of a sound, what would it look like?
Jared: One of my favorite sounds are fire truck alarms. If I had to illustrate the sound it might look like bouncing/rippling flames.
What other creative things do you do that aren't necessarily art?
Jared: I love to work with wood! I find myself collecting scrap wood (pallets, old furniture, etc) hoping to have the time to recreate or rebuild.
If you could have theme song play at will, whenever you entered a room, what song would it be?
Jared: Beastie Boys - So What'cha Want
What is your favorite part of the art process other than completing a project and describe why in detail.
Jared: I'm always humbled and appreciative of those who enjoy my art - that response helps motivate me to create more, better work.
What is the last thing you saw or learned that gave you a feeling of wonder or awe?
Jared: My daughter playing with glowing golf balls in a dark hallway. I was just as entranced with watching her as she was with watching the flickering lights.
You've just discovered a new color. What is it called?
Jared: The perfect grey. not too warm, not too cool. It acts as a negative space as well as enhances surrounding colors. I'd call it greytful
You woke up this morning as a giant octopus. Do you tell anyone, or do you keep working to meet your deadlines?
Jared: I'd pick up more side work! 8 hands are better than two!
